When is The Best Time to Visit Cancun

0

Cancun, in Quintana Roo in the southeast part of Mexico with white sand beaches, natural beauties, archeological sites, and numerous things to do all year, is arguably one of the favorite spots for tourists from all over the world. To begin, let us just state that any time really is a good time to visit Cancun; nevertheless, based on your interests, we will help you choose when is the best time to visit Cancun.

How is The Weather in Cancun?

Although Cancun’s climate is tropical and mostly warm like any other climate is pretty unpredictable. Cancun’s weather cannot be forecasted more than a week in advance, but knowing what to expect during the different seasons will help you make the most of your trip to this paradise. Cancun receives a lot of rain throughout different seasons of the year, however, rain does not mean your beach day will be spoiled, almost every time a brief, heavy rain is followed by hours of sunlight.

In general, the best time to visit Cancun is between December and March, when daytime temperatures are more controlled. However, keep in mind that most tourists will think the same as you, so in high season you will not only experience hot heat in the spring season but also the heat of struggling to acquire a reservation.

Visit During The Most Enjoyable Temperature in Cancun Mexico

Many tourists travel from places where winter is quite chilly, hoping to take a break and enjoy the lovely location and pleasant weather of the Mexican Caribbean. Here we’ll share which exactly are the best seasons, our recommendations, and when is best to seek some indoor activities. Cancun has a semi-tropical climate, and although the climate is generally similar throughout the year, keep in mind that Cancun has two seasons: the wet season, which is slightly warmer, and the dry season, which is colder due to the winds.

December to April are probably the best months to visit Cancun since the weather is considerably due that the humidity being low, and you can enjoy the sun better.  The only drawback is that because it is the best time to visit Cancun, many take advantage of these dates and come visit Cancun, making the prices go higher and there will be a lot of people. But, if you enjoy true heat and are looking for the perfect tan, the months from May to August are great months for you to come to visit, nevertheless, be aware that humidity levels begin to rise and temperatures can exceed 33°F. The good part is that the high season is over, so it’s more affordable.

Lastly, a season not so recommended is from September to November, especially if you come from London or a very rainy place because at the beginning of this season, conditions are more humid and there are many more chances of storms and hurricanes. Nevertheless, there are plenty of things to do in Cancun no matter when you’re visiting.

When is The Cancun High Season?

The highest season in Cancun is probably during Easter week, the first vacation period of the year and varies from year to year. These are dates that families take advantage of to go on vacation. When Easter week starts, the big cities are empty and long queues form at the toll booths, meaning that if you’re traveling on the road, you’ll probably find yourself stuck on a huge infinite line of cars under the hot summer air, and the queues won’t finish there, you might want to get ready for the queues on the different Cancun attractions. Nevertheless, not everything is bad, since lots of people come from all around the world, and many Mexicans decide to visit the Caribbean sea, this can be a great chance of making some new friends, plus, if you’re looking for the perfect tan, you’ll definitely achieve it.

But, if you come to Cancun after Easter, up until June during spring, you’ll definitely have a great time, not only because tourism is a little lower and you’ll be treated like a king….but also because different companies of course want to keep a full year-round schedule, which is why most travel agencies in Cancun offer promotions such as free hotel nights, preferential rates, free breakfasts, and other special offers that are way better to the ones offered in high season.

Nevertheless, no matter during what season you believe is the best season to visit Cancun, remember that it is best to schedule in advance so that upon arrival you prevent unwanted surprises such as “sorry, but we have no rooms left”.

Kin Ha

Cenote Kin Ha is a majestic pool of pristine blue water surrounded by limestone and jungle. This cenote was historically used as a major water source by the ancient Mayan peoples, as well as for cultural offerings. Cenotes were thought to be portals or entrance doors to the Mayan underworld, known as Xibalba and today are portals to guests from all over the world to enjoy the various activities this lace offers, ATV trips, swimming, and zipline courses.

Cenote Cristalino

As a starter on this list, located on the south part of Playa del Carmen near the coast road, only 1 and a half hours away, you’ll find one of the most astonishing roofless cenote caverns in the world. During the day it is illuminated, yes, but when the sun is at its highest, the brightness with which the colors shine is unbelievable. The combination of these attractive shallow waters makes it ideal for both children and non-swimmers. You can also enjoy diving and jumping into the waters and refresh afterward and feast on some nearby restaurants or make your own picnic on some sites around Cenote Azul, truly this is a great place to visit with the family.

Jardín del Edén

In English, the Cenote Garden of Eden is a name that refers to the mythical and ethereal biblical place in relation to this beautiful Cenote. This cenote is only 1 hour and a half from Cancun, hidden between bushes you’ll discover a wonderful open cenote full of colors, with a huge diversity of vegetation and animals. It’s a lovely location to just swim and chill in the warm sun surrounded by lush greenery.

Siete Bocas

Only about a half-hour drive north of Cancun, this cenote’s name translates as “Cenote of the Seven Mouths,” referring to the seven distinct access it provides to the underground river that feeds the Cenote. These waters are supplied by an underground river in the Ruta De Los Centers cave system.  This maze of cenotes winds through and between tunnels, with cliffs to jump off and a plethora of stunning rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites.

La Noria

Cenote La Noria, about an hour’s drive south of Cancun, is famous for the beauty of its crystal blue waters, the crazy species variety, and the spectacular stalactites overhead you’ll find as you explore the cave system. Also, weird but true, cenote La Noria is technically a consolidation of two independent cenotes, and you can explore both.

Vegan Restaurants in Cancun

It is well known that eating a healthy plant-based diet not only has several health benefits but also has a positive impact on the Earth’s health. That’s why every day there are more people becoming vegan. In Mexico, we are trying to adopt it, and there are very good restaurants. That’s why I made the Top 4 Vegan Restaurants in Cancun.

But before I start with the list I’d like to recommend you Cancun Food Tours. They offer amazing gastronomic tours like a cooking class, and a taco tour, among others, where they actually offer vegan and vegetarian options in all their tours, plus great cancellation policies.

So, getting back on track, it’s time to rate the best Cancun Vegan Restaurants, where I relied only on their flavor and general experience.

Sirena Morena: My personal favorite vegan restaurant in Cancun

Sirena Morena is more than just a regular vegan restaurant, it is also an Eco Shop. Their dishes and products are 100% organic, and local. They created a peaceful healthy environment that welcomes everyone who visits, with a completely natural ingredients menu. They have meals for all vegetarian and vegan fellows. All their menu is very, VERY tasty and varied. They have healthy juices, bowls, natural energy shots, and all kinds of pasta, burgers, and even pozole! What I love the most about Sirena Morena is that it is a zero-waste restaurant with a very complete store with natural products for personal care, accessories, and healthy cooking ingredients.

Even more, they like to promote environmental awareness, so if you don’t know what to do with all you’re bottles of dish soap, shampoo, or just your water bottle and other kinds of waste, you can bring your separate inorganic waste here!

If you visit it anytime due to my recommendation, please send greetings to “La Tía Bruji (Lah tee-ah Broo-hee)”. That’s the best way to thank me for the information.

Bao Vegan Cancun, great vegan food in Cancun

If you’re hungry and are looking for a cozy and delicious place, you should definitely visit this restaurant on Sunyachen av. This place might not be as big as other establishments, but the seasoning and the love they put into their dishes are something all their regular customers appreciate. If what you’re craving is something that will leave you completely full, you definitely have to try their generous pesto pasta or the perfectly crafted Baovegan pizza. And if you’re having a bit of a sweet tooth, customers totally recommend trying their sweet bread with a hot steaming coffee.

Herbívoro, made by Vegans in Cancun

This restaurant just opened in 2022. This modern place is probably one of the best vegan restaurants in Cancun you could choose from. You’ll find some delicious and known choices like nuggets, hot dogs, enchiladas, tacos, pizza, and so many different kinds of cakes.  And to refresh, you surely have to try the cherry almond smoothie, it is to die for. Something that defines this place is that they put so much effort into bringing the best ingredients, all their veggies are fresh and crisp; mix that with the authenticity of the flavors and you have an unforgettable vegan meal.

Dharma Vegetariano a local restaurant in Cancun

On Piña street (a vegan restaurant on a street called pineapple, ain’t that cute?), you’ll find a very cozy and lovely local restaurant that has all kinds of vegan food, prepared with fresh ingredients and with the most important seasoning of all: “Love”. Here you’ll find a great variety of 100% vegan dishes, with a lot of detail on the seasoning, idyllic for vegan and non-vegan foodies.
If you liked my Cancun Vegan Restaurants ranking you can probably find good content about Cancun here.

Cancun to Isla Mujeres Ferry
The view at Cancun to Isla Mujeres Ferry

Have you been searching for the best options to travel to Isla Mujeres from Cancun? Probably you have found that there is a Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres available and that’s why you are here looking for more information. Here I am going to explain to you the options, prices and my opinion.

Cancun to Isla Mujeres Ferry Options, Costs, and Schedules

First, we need to know that there are different ferry companies. I personally recommend you choose the one that best fits your needs, not the price. As some of the Isla Mujeres Ferry docks have no parking available, or it has no public transportation. So if you have a car and there are no parking lots it can be dangerous and more expensive; or there is no public transportation, so to grab a taxi back to your hotel is going to be more expensive than your whole trip to Isla Mujeres itself.

Before I start with all the information I also leave here three alternatives for the Isla Mujeres Ferry. They are from Viator which offers payment options and flexible cancellation policies.

Where is the Ferry to Isla Mujeres?

You can find Isla Mujeres ferry docks pretty much anywhere in Cancun Bay area. But listing them there are locations:

  • Punta Sam. This is the best location if you are staying in Costa Mujeres or Playa Mujeres. Some hotels are within walking distance from here. Although this is one of the first locations ever, it’s becoming famous now.
  • Puerto Juarez. The most famous dock as you can find almost all ferry companies here. It became really famous because this is the location that locals use. And it use to be cheaper for tourists too. NOT ANYMORE! So, if you are trying to save some bucks, just use the closest dock. However, if you are bringing a car, this is the ferry dock with parking available. (Also now the one in Zona Hotelera Km.4 Playa Linda)
  • Cancun Hotel Zone. In Cancun Hotel Zone you can find also all companies in different locations. One in Playa Linda, one in Playa Tortugas, and one in Playa Caracol near the Party Center.

How long is the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres?

The ride from Cancun to Isla Mujeres is from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the location you choose. The schedules to Isla Mujeres vary, but it runs every 30 minutes from 6:00 to 00:00. Each company has its own schedule but they are pretty much similar.

  • Punta Sam & Puerto Juarez. These are the fastest ones, it takes from 12 to 15 minutes. If a fisherman tells you it’s the same time as the ferry, don’t listen, it’s not true.
  • Cancun Hotel Zone. As these docks are located further, the ride goes from 25 to 40 minutes depending on the weather conditions.

How much is the ferry to Isla Mujeres

The Ferry to Isla Mujeres cost starts from $15 USD roundtrip. But, as I described before, it really depends on the location and the service itself.

  • Ultramar. Roundtrip prices start from $23 USD for an adult and $15 USD for children.
  • Xailing. Roundtrip prices start from $29 USD for an adult
  • Jetway. Roundtrip prices start from $20 USD for an adult

What’s the Best Ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres

In my opinion, the best one is Ultramar. Some years ago I roasted them in this article because they were having very bad practices when they were a monopoly. But they have more schedules open (06:00 to 00:00) and more locations.

The schedules are every hour from 6:00 to 00:00. But it changes depending on the location. Find the locations here.

You can check the full schedule and prices on their official website here.

Cancun to Isla Mujeres Marinsa Ferry

Marinsa Ferry is the cheapest way to go to Isla Mujeres for students and locals. Prices from Cancun to Isla Mujeres Ferry start from 2 USD! For locals, it is $4 USD roundtrip. And, it has a discount for Mexicans as well. The price for tourists is the same as Ultramar’s. It is located at Puerto Juarez. 500 meters from Ultramar Puerto Juarez.

I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s old and slow.

The schedule is every hour from 6:15 to 21:15.

Once you arrive at Isla Mujeres you can rent a Golf Cart or make so many other activities. Remember that the ferry to Isla Mujeres is only a shuttle, but there are options such as All-inclusive tours.

The 4-seat golf cart with trunk, or trunk, is the perfect cart for families with children, since all the seats are facing forward. In addition, it is very easy to carry all the luggage or suitcases without the danger of falling down the road.

In Isla Mujeres, you can have all those things, but there are rules and requirements to be able to drive and rent a golf cart.

In summary, golf cart rental offices work just like a conventional car rental or car rental office. So, the requirements to rent a golf cart in Isla Mujeres are the following:

Isla Mujeres Traffic Rules and Regulations

Don’t forget to follow the rules. You are on vacation and you don’t want to hassle or pay extra. In Isla Mujeres, the authorities are very strict with traffic regulations since the streets are very narrow. This is one of the reasons why there are no car rental offices in Isla Mujeres. In addition, the island measures only 16 km. (10 miles) long. The recommendations are as follows:

  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Do not exceed the speed limit
  • Watch out for pedestrians
  • Don’t jump out of the car
  • Be careful where you park

Where to rent a golf cart in Isla Mujeres

There are many offices where you can rent a cart. Even from the moment you step off the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres until the next two blocks, you’ll be greeted with offers on everything from: car rental, scooters fishing trips, tours, restaurants, handicrafts, even tequila. Pretty much a little bit of everything, whatever.

I recommend that you look for an establishment to avoid problems. There are several of them a few steps from the ferry. Rent it in the place where you feel most comfortable and feel the best confidence. If you visit the island in high season or on weekends, I recommend you book in advance. Golf carts usually sell out by noon.

Best Tacos in Cancun

Looking for the best Tacos in Cancun? You’re in the right place! I will show you the most delicious and traditional tacos in Cancun.

Mexico is a giant country with different cultures and history. We have 32 states, and pretty much, each of them, has its own tacos. Different ingredients, type of meet and flavors.

In case you are at a resort or you have a short time in Cancun I recommend Cancun Taco Tours to try the best taco restaurants in one day or Cancun Street Food Tour for other Mexican dishes.

Best Tacos in Cancun Mexico

La Parrilla is a must! One of the very first restaurants and one of the Best Mexican Food in Cancun. Tacos al pastor here are delicious, prepared with hand-made tortillas. La Parrilla also has live mariachis, guacamole prepared at your table, and different flavor Margaritas.

One of the best places to eat Yucatecan or Mayan Food is El Pocito. Located in the Center of Cancun. Although you can try a lot of dishes, they have the best Tacos de Cochinita, which is a very tender smoked pork seasoned with axiote and sour orange which can only be found in Yucatan Peninsula.

Best Tacos in Cancun Hotel Zone

No better than Tacos Rigo in Hotel Zone. The same tacos as Tacos Rigo that we described previously. However, these ones are located in the heart of the party center in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Birria Tacos in Cancun

Birria is a dish from the north of Mexico. Pretty far from Cancun. But Los Meros de Jalisco is definitely the place you should visit if you want to try good Birria in Cancun. They have four different salsas with different spice levels. Cancun Food Tours visit here in their Taco Tour.

Best Fish Tacos in Cancun

One of Cancun’s most popular fish tacos are Los de Pescado. Two locations right in the city center. Actually, both of them are in Supermanzana 20. Fish and shrimp tacos are a must. They look pretty simple, but they have a salad bar and different dressings including spicy and sweet ones.

Tacos Pastor in Cancun

One of the most delicious tacos in Cancun overall is Los Tarascos. They have three locations all over Cancun. Aside from tacos de pastor they also have bistec, rib tacos, chicken, and amazing recipes.

5 Things to do in Cancun when it rains 2022

Things to do in Cancun when it rains

When you visit Cancun, you expect to spend most of the time at its beach, maybe rent a boat, take a tour, or just enjoy laying by the pool at your resort. Although Cancun weather is mostly warm and sunny, there are some rainy and cold days. So I bring up to you four amazing things to do in Cancun when it rains.

You don’t have to feel unlucky if there is rain in Cancun, because there are some free and paid alternatives, which I’ve selected due to their quality, trustworthiness, and cancellation policies.

Try an ATV Tour in Cancun if it rains

I am not a rain lover, but I am not a rest lover either. If there is bad weather in Cancun I will find something to do. Well, this Cancun ATV Tour was wonderful. You grab an ATV to visit an open cenote and an underground cenote with stalactites and stalagmites.

Cenote water is usually very cold. But the best part is that when there is cold weather, for some reason the water turns to be warmer. I haven’t asked why, but it happens in every cenote.

You can find this Cancun ATV Tour from $69 USD and it includes transportation from your hotel, activities, and food.

The Best Cancun ATV Tour

Try a cooking class!

As funny as it sounds, it is true. Maybe it is time to learn some foreign cooking skills. I mean, you are looking for what to do in Cancun when it’s raining, and getting into a kitchen to learn something new it’s amazing. You will visit the market to select your ingredients, learn how to cook different dishes, and finally, have an amazing lunch with all the freshly received Mexican chefs. Check the tour here.
Cancun Cooking Class

Xplor or Xplor Fuego

Xplor is a theme park with different activities. It’s really amazing. I’m not gonna lie, it’s way better to experience it when it’s not raining. However, it is definitely a good alternative if it’s raining anyway. You are going to visit caverns with amphibious vehicles, ATVs, and canoeing in underground rivers. At this moment, the weather doesn’t matter and you will be already wet. So when you get to the outside activities, the ziplines, you will only get a bit wetter.

Try local businesses, shopping, and restaurants in the city Center

Cancun city center is colorful and different from the hotel zone. Most people tell the tourists that the city center is where Coco Bongo is. However, it is not that far from it. Although it’s raining, all the markets, street food, and restaurants take place. You can find very delicious desserts, tacos, handcrafts, and even street shows. It is very safe, nothing to worry about.

If you don’t like adventuring yourself to these places, I highly recommend you the Cancun Taco Tour by Cancun Food Tours. They pick you up from your hotel and they bring you everywhere with an amazing guide.

Playa Tortugas Cancun Beach

Playa Tortugas Cancun Beach: The Beach of the locals

Want a real locals’ beach in Cancun? Playa Tortugas Cancun Beach is the place. One of the most iconic beaches in the area. Full of services but with a calm, shallow water coast.

In the last years, Playa Tortugas have been cataloged as a cheap, trashy beach by snobby locals. However, I love this beach as it represents the freedom of my culture. Loud cumbia and salsa, beach waiters offering beer and drinks, restaurants, and an amazing view of the bay.

The water and sand are amazing. But you can also take these points into count.

Perfect Location to bring your Children

Playa Tortugas is located at Kilometer 6.5 of Cancun Hotel’s Zone. It is well known by taxi drivers and you can easily get there by stepping into R-1 or R-2 bus and ask the driver to stop there and let you know.

You can also see the exact location here.

If your plan is to visit Isla Mujeres, Playa Tortugas is one of the locations that Ultramar Ferry uses to visit the Island.

Playa Tortugas Cancun Beach has Free Parking

As in almost any beach in Cancun, there is a limited parking lot, where you can safely leave your car without paying any money. Of course, you have to arrive very early as the people working there also bring their cars, so spaces are very much of a trouble.

There are also people there charging for the parking spaces of some “private places” And it is also an option if you have arrived a bit late.

Playa Tortugas Restaurants and Beach Club
Playa Tortugas Restaurants and Beach Clubs

Restaurants and Attractions

In Playa Tortugas, you can rent an umbrella and chairs for the day for around $150 Pesos, $8 dollars and you can actually get served with drinks and food from several restaurants around.

There is an OXXO, the Mexican Seven Eleven, so you can also buy your drinks and food there if you don’t want to pay a beach restaurant price.

There is also a Bungee Jump in case you want to get a little bit brave. It is a nice view and there you can also find a very nice, private and affordable bar.

If you want to find other options, I wrote a list of Cancun Beaches that might be useful for your choice.

Cancun COVID Travel Restrictions 29-10-2020 update

Cancun COVID Travel Restrictions
A Sunset in Cancun with NO Travel Restrictions

As a traveler, the biggest concern nowadays turns around the travel bans and along. The reason why, as a local, I decided to write this article about Cancun COVID travel restrictions and try to answer as many questions I get.

Cancun COVID Travel Restrictions

First of all, there are NO Restrictions. Mexico has been one of the few countries that have never made official traveling restrictions. You were always allowed to enter. However, a lot of businesses were closed, and tourism was only allowed for business.

So now you know, you can visit Cancun, book a hotel and enjoy the Riviera Maya. The only thing is that you must have an onward flight and to follow some health regulations.

Do I need a COVID Negative Test to enter Cancun?

No. You only need to fill a form with your information for control and they will measure your temperature in order to check that you have no symptoms.

Some airlines, if you travel inside Mexico, will make you a quick COVID test.

Are there Regulations?

Yes. There are No restrictions but regulations. However, you can travel normally.

Some of them are the next ones:

  • Use a mask in public spaces. You don’t have to wear it on the streets but if you are going to any indoor place or with a lot of people, you must wear a mask.
  • If you have any symptoms like coughing, fever, headache, etc… Lock yourself down and call the COVID line. They will tell you what to do and follow your case without putting other people in danger.
  • You can follow all Official Government information at this link https://coronavirus.gob.mx/ You can even download an App to follow Coronavirus information.

Tips for your Travel

For your flights try to book with Star Alliance. They are a bit more expensive but they had lowered their prices and they are the only ones that haven’t stopped operations. They have so many scales and brands working that they can easily change your flight in case there is any cancellation. It has worked for me and my Girlfriend on our way to Germany.

Book tours and hotels where they have a wide cancellation policy. It means that you can cancel with no cost and no questions. So you don’t stick to a “Corona” Policy. I can recommend you Tours & Clubs.

For more tips, you can check more tips about Cancun in this blog section.

My Opinion Cancun COVID Travel Restrictions

I think the Mexican Government has been making things work pretty well. And they leave all responsibility to citizens. The only situation is that Mexican Health System is not the best and people suffer a lot from obesity and diabetes.

So, if you are coming from a Risk Area, take care of the people around. They will be super happy to see tourism as a lot of families live from that. But don’t forget to take care of them as well.

You can ask me more on my Facebook Page or Instagram. Don’t forget to follow me if this helped you.

Moctezuma Crown

Moctezuma Crown
The Original Moctezuma Crown displayed at the Welt Museum of Vienna

One of the most important relics that are still remaining from the Aztec culture in Mexico is the Plume or Crest of the Emperor, the Famous Moctezuma Crown. Which was “stolen” by Hernan Cortes.

4 Facts About Moctezuma Crown

I am a Marketing Teacher, and although I like history, it is not my main subject. I will explain the history of Moctezuma Crests in five points.

It’s in Vienna and not in Mexico

At the moment this Mexican holdover is located at the Ethnologist Museum of ViennaWelt Museum. Although there is an exact replica in Mexico City.

There’s a theory that Moctezuma knew that the war was close, so he sent the Plume as a gift to Charles I to distract Hernan Cortes. But at the moment, Charles I was located in Germany. It was forgotten and found again to be displayed in the Museum.

Mexico wants it back but it’s mission impossible

For many years, the Mexican Government has tried to get the crown back. The last try was in October of 2020 after the words of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that said “We are going to ask them if we can at least borrow it, although we know it’s not going to happen”.

In fact, he also mentioned that the Austrian Government didn’t even lend the crest to Maximiliano when he came to rule Mexico. The reason is that the relic is very fragile and wouldn’t bear the vibrations. Not even with technology.

Mexico has the Golden Float that Maximiliano used when he arrived in Mexico. So, the deal-breaker is in. But it’s too dangerous to exchange them.

Selfie with Moctezuma Crown
Selfie with Moctezuma Crown in the Ethnology Museum of Vienna

You can have a Selfie with Crown

Although what they might say about the security, once you are in the museum, you can be relatively close to the relic. It’s actually very large. It’s over a meter high and almost 2 meters wide. With bird feathers, precious stones, and gold laces.

It is in a room with passages and holdovers from other cultures and continents. There is a total replica at the Anthropology Museum of Mexico in Mexico City.

Mexicans in Vienna are all-mighty thanks to the Moctezuma Crown

I am not talking about being extra hot or treated better just for being Mexican. But the Welt Museum entrance is 16 Euro. However, if you bring your Mexican ID, you can enter the Museum for free. It’s huge! So if as a Mexican, you are in Vienna, I would recommend you to save one day for this wonderful place.
