Mahahual Quintana Roo is one of my favorite places in the Caribbean. It is around a one-hour drive away from Bacalar.
A beach that is almost empty all the time. Even most of the stores and bars remain part closed due to the reduced flow of tourists. A condition that I really like. You can see people doing shore fishing and some other activities. Perfect place to relax and enjoy the beach.
However, Mahahual has a second identity. It is known as Costa Maya. Costa Maya is its commercial name for tourism, mostly for cruise passengers. When this happens you can always see this place completely changed. Souvenir shops and beach clubs open and give this amazing beach another view and environment.
Also, you should be careful on Sundays or long weekends. As locals from Chetumal visit this place and can be a little be crowded.
It is really easy to get there, but right now it is not that common. There are some shuttles from Chetumal and some tours from Bacalar. Anyway, the highway is in very good shape. So don’t worry if you rent a car.
